When I find an interesting eBook on All You Can Books I download and read it on my e-Reader. I love to read printed books as well, because the felling is not the same. It really doesn't matter the way we read, as long as we enjoy it!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06129205815474143828noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8743841912028246535.post-42599439370210912312012-01-02T15:20:06.405-04:002012-01-02T15:20:06.405-04:00I have a Kobo (which I do NOT recommend), and I st...I have a Kobo (which I do NOT recommend), and I still definitely prefer physical books for several reasons

1) I agree that I want better note-taking abilities in ebooks. I know some ereaders are better for that, and when I eventually replace mine, I'll look out for that.

2) I find most ebooks that I'm sent to review are in PDF format, and although the Kobo is better at reading them than most ereaders (you can zoom in), it's still a pain to zoom in, scroll down to the bottom half of the page, then scroll to the side of the page to flip it. (As opposed to ePubs, where you just tap the side of the screen to flip, and it's already at a comfortable reading size.) eReaders have to get better at reading PDFs.

3) I like seeing the physical process I'm making in a book. My eReader will tell me I'm 76% of the way through or whatever, but it's not the same as seeing how much of the book is left to read.

4) eBooks are not as demanding as physical books. Physical books demand to be read. They remind you every time you look at them. eBooks get filed away on my eReader and are easily forgotten.

5) Again, a problem with my eReader, but books don't suddenly cut out when the battery ran out without warning. (Damn you, Kobo!) What's more, they don't require charging at all. Also, if you drop them in a puddle, it's just that book, not your whole library (or, even if you have the ebooks backed up on your computer, still the expensive device).

6) I find my bookshelves comforting. I love being surrounded by books, and able to browse my shelf (or other people's shelves).

7) Physical books are still cheaper. I find lots of physical books for a dollar or two in various places. But what's more, even if I spend $7 on a used book (where an ebook would be about the same price), I can then sell back my book to the bookstore for $3 credit, making it a $4 book. I can't get anything back for the ebook, even if I hate it and delete it.

I am definitely still pro-ebook as a concept, but nothing compares to a real book in my personal reading life. I am really looking forward to good etextbooks, though. (Good meaning that they are cheap and you are able to make notes in them.) That would be handy. Especially if they have a search function!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8743841912028246535.post-75638816491682562612012-01-02T11:36:22.371-04:002012-01-02T11:36:22.371-04:00I bought myself a kindle for Christmas and LOVE it...I bought myself a kindle for Christmas and LOVE it. I'm a total convert. The standard kindle (and the nook, I think, though not the Kindle Fire) does not have a LED screen, they're not back lit, so I don't find it tires my eyes the way reading on a regular screen does. It feels, surprisingly, wonderfully, exactly like reading paper, and I can read outside or in the greenhouse in bright light which is impossible with a regular LED screen.
I rarely, if ever, write marginalia, so I can't comment on that, but footnotes/end notes are very intuitive, and to me anyway, better than analog. Just tap where the footnote is indicated in the text, and I'm instantly at the note itself. When done, I just hit the back button, and I'm back to where I was reading.
I got it originally to read digital files in a more comfortable way, but I've been surprised to discover I much prefer the reading experience on it to analog, to the point that I'm tempted to re-purchase some of my favorite titles in digital format.Josephhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14433418903218452909noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8743841912028246535.post-1661348544059292402012-01-02T10:57:04.377-04:002012-01-02T10:57:04.377-04:00@foureleven thanks for stopping by! It's a small accessibility issue in some ways, but I do find that a lot of tech stuff overlooks that not everyone can physically interact with a screen to the same extent. 3-D movies are another case in point. Hanna and I basically have to write off any big-screen release that comes out in 3-D because it just isn't worth getting sick!annajcookhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17573723390785613915noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8743841912028246535.post-76434356513058732032012-01-02T09:34:31.117-04:002012-01-02T09:34:31.117-04:00Great post, Anna. Since I am either staring at a screen for class or work, I prefer not to stare at another in my downtime. Also, since I get migraines, my eyes tire very easily when looking at a screen for extended periods of time. I do think e-readers are nice for accessibly and convenient. I know that some librarians have strong opinions one way or another, but I've always been in the mindset of whatever gets people to read!fourelevenhttp://www.harpyness.comnoreply@blogger.com
